Weather cooler but sunny in Bay leading up to Anzac Day

Sporting activities should be all go this weekend, with fine weather forecast for next week, though early starters might have to rug up on the sidelines.

Today should be sunny and fine with gusty westerlies and a high of 20C, while Tomorrow the temperature could climb to 23C.

Saturday should be fine with a high of 24C. Showers will return briefly on Sunday, before the sun returns.

Meteorologist John Law said the rest of the week was expected to stay fine with daytime temperatures hovering around the high-teens heading into Anzac Day on Wednesday.

"A lot of the weather over the next few days is dominated by westerlies or southwesterlies, which means Hawke's Bay on the eastern side of the country will be getting some of the better weather, the drier weather as well,'' Law said.

''Do watch out, though, for those northwesterly winds. High pressure is still with us, keeping things dry and pretty warm.

"We do have a little bit of a southwesterly change that runs up and across us on Sunday, so there will be a few showers to watch out for there.

''I think we're going to find there is plenty more dry weather to come.

"It will be a cold start if you're heading out to those dawn services — temperatures of about six or seven degrees to start the day on Wednesday.

MetService also said there were no reports of tornado activity after a "strange squall" or "mini tornado" in Greenmeadows was reported to Hawke's Bay Today about 2pm yesterday.

Meteorologist Brian Mercer said it was likely the effect was caused by wind, with gusts of 63km/h and 67km/h recorded at Hawke's Bay Airport and Cape Kidnappers respectively, between 2pm and 3pm.

"There was a line of showers pushing through Hawke's Bay at about that time.''
