23-year-old Daniel Lee is walking the length of New Zealand to raise funds for the rescue helicopter that saved his life as a child. Made with funding from NZ on Air.

Daniel Lee is walking the length of the country to raise funds for the rescue helicopter service that saved his life as a child.

"It got me into Hastings hospital within about 30 minutes of my accident, and this is my way of saying thanks," says Mr Lee

Mr Lee was just 6 when he was involved in a tractor accident on a remote Hawke's Bay farm.

The Lowe Corporation, a small rescue helicopter service, saved his life.

Now, 17 years on with a love for the outdoors, he's walking the Te Araroa Trail, to say thanks to the people who helped him survive.

The 23-year-old has made it to Whanganui, where he went to boarding school.

It's almost the halfway point of his expedition.

Most nights he sleeps in a tent. If he's lucky he finds a woodshed or a carport.

"This is my way of appreciating what helicopter services do for people in New Zealand."

Mr Lee hopes to raise more than 10,000 dollars for the Lowe Corporation rescue helicopter, enabling more lives to be saved.
