The call is out for those who think they may like to be part of one of the Southern Hemisphere's greatest sporting celebrations.

Farmlands Horse of the Year need around 400 volunteers to help at the early March event which attracts thousands of equine enthusiasts to Hawke's Bay.

It's the premier event on the equestrian calendar for New Zealand where the best of the best battle it out for the top crowns and some rather serious prize money.

HOY equestrian competition manager Toni O'Kane is keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have what it takes to be part of the event.

While she's keen for those who have horse or stock knowledge, or may have been to the show before, there are also plenty of jobs for others with different skills.

"The more we have involved, the lighter the load," Toni said.

"It is such a fun event to be involved with . . . it is the pinnacle event for New Zealand and amazing to see so many people having such a great time."

The 2016 show gets under way on Monday, February 29, with mounted games, pinto, Welsh and showing classes, and runs through to Sunday, March 6.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Toni via email - toni@hoy.kiwi - and include a little information about yourself.

"Tell us what your strengths are and how you think you could help."
