Havelock North will be bustling on Saturday as roads close for the inaugural Village Street Carnival.

The event replaces a tired Boulevard Day, which organisers said was no longer in keeping with the boutique shopping experience.

Local retailers and producers were keen to come on board with the new-look family day out, which will take place from 10am-3pm.

"We wanted to upgrade it, the retailers wanted something new and special, so we embarked on this concept," said Havelock North Business Association president Sam Jackman.

Organisers aim to tap into a fun carnival vibe by dressing up store windows and having sellers set up on the street.

There will be bargains from local stores, food offerings and plenty of entertainment, such as street performers and a DJ.

"In the past, our other members outside the village didn't get to take part, we were restricted to retailers only," Mr Jackman said.

"We were concerned with getting all our members involved, [including] artisan suppliers and growers."

Eateries such as St George's and Black Barn, who operate outside village boundaries, will have the opportunity to set up in town. The Magpies rugby team mascot and Ranfurly Shield will be on show, while children can enjoy story readings, a magician, face painting, free rides, bouncy castles and much more.

Fashionistas can preview hot styles for the upcoming festive season, with two catwalk shows featuring clothing from local stores - one on Joll Rd at 11am and another from 12pm on Middle Rd.

Women can take part in a Californian Beach Party at Visage Hair and Beauty, while the men head across the road to sample a pork slider from the Village Butchers barbecue.

Those who could use some extra money for Christmas should take part in a Cash Drop with The Hits, to win $1000 at 1pm.

Roads will be closed in the village throughout the event but parking will be available near the Village Green. There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to prepare for what Mr Jackman hopes will be a successful annual fixture.
