A young boy who was injured after leaping from a window at Taradale Primary remains in critical condition.

It was an "unfortunate accident" that left a young boy hanging from a school window by his shirt, police say.

The 9-year-old boy remains in a critical condition in Auckland's Starship Hospital.

He was injured after he leaped from a window and caught his shirt on something that caused him breathing difficulties.

The boy was put in an induced coma and was transferred to Starship from Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital on Monday night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marty James said police were satisfied the incident was an "unfortunate accident".

"We have completed our examination of the scene and we have found nothing untoward that could have contributed to the boy's injuries. However, we still need to speak to a few more pupils to try to confirm what happened in the lead-up to the boy's fall," Mr James said.

The school had co-operated fully with the police investigation and the Ministry of Education.

Taradale Primary School Board of Trustees chairman Steve Alexander said the school was focusing on supporting the family and the wider school community.

Pupils who might have been upset by the incident had been offered specialist support services.

"The family have asked everyone to respect their privacy and we have agreed to that. As expected, this is a very traumatic time for them and we are helping them in any way we can," Mr Alexander said.

Ministry of Education head of sector enablement and support Katrina Casey, said their traumatic incident support team has been supporting the school.

"The team's role is to help the school return to its normal day-to-day routines and offer any support they need to do that," Ms Casey said. "We've talked to staff, the principal and board members.

"We've also briefed staff on how students may respond to this difficult event, and how to get access to additional specialist psychological support if it's needed for any individual students or staff members."

Ms Casey said the school was coping really well with this distressing event.
