Two people have been hospitalised with serious injuries following a crash on State Highway 2 in Hastings tonight.
Emergency services responded to the two-vehicle smash near Matahorua Rd, Tutira, about 6.15pm.
“Two people are reported to be in a serious condition,” police said.
A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle remained at the scene shortly before 8pm.
A helicopter was also requested to respond to the scene.
One patient in a critical condition and another in a serious condition were transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.
The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and SH2 has closed.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said the “serious crash” was reported between Sandy Creek Rd and Matahorua Rd.
Police advised motorists to take an alternate route.
The new highway will open in June, with the exact date not yet set.
