Two men have been arrested and police are appealing for information after a carjacking in Hastings on Friday.

Police say two men threatened a driver with a gun, stole his car and used it to ram a police vehicle.

Two 24-year-olds have been arrested.

They were both injured in the alleged crime spree, police said.

Police are treating the incident as an aggravated robbery and are appealing to the public for help as they continue to investigate.

The offenders pointed a firearm at a man in a silver Volkswagen Golf MK 4 in Cornwall Park, Hastings, and told him to get out of the vehicle about 6.20pm yesterday, Senior Sergeant David Sutherland said.

The alleged carjackers then drove in the victim's car, EGU927, along Tomoana Rd towards Heretaunga.

Police spotted the car in Mayfair and followed it to Camberley before it sped off about 9pm.

The vehicle travelled through Hastings, Flaxmere and back to Camberley and police put spikes in place to stop it.

About 9.15pm the car rammed into a police car parked at the corner of Lowe St and Orchard Rd. A police officer was inside the car but was not injured.

Patrol units arrived to help contain the offending car and the driver was arrested inside the vehicle, police said.

He was taken to hospital and remains there under guard.

A Hawke's Bay Hospital spokesperson said the man was in a critical condition in intensive care.

Police say they caught a second male after a short foot chase. He was in custody last night and being treated for injuries he sustained before fleeing police.

Mr Sutherland said no police officers or members of the public were injured in the alleged crime spree.

A firearm was removed the car.

Police are continuing to investigate the "serious incident", Sutherland said.

As part of their investigation, Hawke's Bay police want to find out where the car was between 6.20pm and 9pm on Friday.

They asked anyone with information or who had seen the car during that period to contact them on 06 873 0500 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
