A farm accident, rain and near freezing temperatures were no match for the success of this year's Targa Hawke's Bay motorsport rally.

Thousands of spectators gathered along the course which spanned much of the Hawke's Bay region on Saturday and Sunday.

Event director Peter Martin said despite wet conditions on Saturday and a chilly 4 degrees Celsius start yesterday the event ran like clockwork.

"Seeing more than 3000 people waiting at the finish was awesome.

"It is more difficult to drive in the wet but it was still enjoyable for everyone - they all had smiles on their faces."

Special Stage 4 had to be closed for about five minutes on Saturday morning to allow medics to transport a man to hospital after a farm accident but it did not cause any problems for the competition, he said.

"We had to stop one stage because a local farmer cut off his finger with a chainsaw but luckily we had medics on standby only 1km away who were able to get to him within a few minutes."

Throughout the entire event there were only five minor crashes, however, there were quite a few mechanical faults, Mr Martin said.

"No one was injured at all, everyone got back safe and sound which is always what we want.

"The mechanical faults are part and parcel of an event like this but more than 90 per cent of cars were able to finish.

"Any endurance event like this takes its toll on gears and clutches."

Having at least 70 out of more than 90 drivers and their families come from outside the region was great for Hawke's Bay tourism with people using accommodation, restaurants and bars, the event director said.

"We all had a wonderful weekend in Hawke's Bay."

Cars were on display in an overnight parc ferme at the Havelock North Village Green on Friday night but this was moved to Martin Pl for Saturday night due to wet weather.

A single-day event within Targa Hawke's Bay, the Rally of Hawke's Bay, was held on Saturday in conjunction with the Hawke's Bay Car Club.

Although Targa has been coming to Hawke's Bay on-and-off for more than a decade this year marked the first two-day event in the region.

Mr Martin said they would be debriefing in a few weeks time and would likely decide to continue with the new set-up next year.
