The five-month-old boy who died in Hawke's Bay Hospital last week has been named as Mikara Ranui Jarius Reti, of Flaxmere and was the second alleged child-abuse death in Hawke's Bay in a month.
It comes four weeks after 5-year-old Napier girl Sahara Baker-Koro was found in her bed by family members
on December 21.
Baby Mikara was admitted to Hawke's Bay Hospital a week ago, where he died of internal injuries.
A 21-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in relation to the death.
A tangi for the baby was held at Mangapeehi Marae in Bennydale on Saturday.
His mother, Jamie Reti said in a statement this morning that "our precious wee boy was tragically taken from us".
"Our whanau is grieving terribly at this time and we ask that our privacy be respected as we work through this difficult time."
Ms Reti also has a two-year-old child and is understood to be pregnant. She is no longer in a relationship with Mikara's father, Matene Te Aho.
On her Facebook page, Ms Reti posted a tribute to her baby boy, calling him her shining light.
"Wen its dark ur my angel my lyf my everythng i love and miss u so much," she wrote.
Child abuse prevention organisation Child Matters said the death would be a shock for the community, particularly coming so soon after the death of Sahara.
"Obviously people will be in shock to think that this can happen, not once but twice in our community," said chief executive Anthea Simcock.
"We need to stop tolerating it. Not by throwing our hands up in horror and blaming people once we've had these tragedies, but by saying what are we going to do about it in future."
She said families with young mothers who have little support, and non-related adults living in the house, were at particular risk.
Child, Youth and Family operations general manager Marama Wiki said the family was not known to the agency before the baby's death.
"The death of this five month-old baby is very distressing and our thoughts and sympathies are with those who knew and loved him," she said.
"We are now working with the family to provide whatever support we can as they grieve over the terrible loss of their baby son and to assess the safety of the other child in the house."
Ms Wiki said every year, about 60 children under the age of two were admitted to hospital with "shocking injuries".
"Many of these children are not known to CYF until it's too late," she said.
Police investigating Mikara's death said a post mortem was carried out in Wellington on Wednesday last week, and further medical tests are being conducted.
"The post mortem results we have are only interim and we cannot yet confirm the injuries that Mikara died from," Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange said.
"We will be able to confirm that information once we have a full post mortem report."
A 21-year-old man charged with manslaughter was to reappear in the Hastings District Court today.
He was remanded in custody at his first court appearance on Saturday, and granted interim name suppression.
Last week 24-year-old Kerry Ratana appeared in Napier District Court charged with sexual violation of five-year-old Sahara.
Ratana had been living at the Onekawa house with Sahara's mother and siblings, but was not related to her.
Ratana was remanded in custody without entering a plea. Further charges may be laid.
