A car has collided with a truck on State Highway 5.

Emergency services were called to the scene "just north of the Te Haroto summit" about 7.15pm, a police spokeswoman said.

One lane was open.

The crash occurred "just on the Napier side of the Napier-Taupo Rd", she said.

Central fire service communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said three fire appliances were still on the way to the crash site at 7.45pm.

It was "some considerable distance" from Napier, Wanoa said.
