Family and friends of a 25-year-old Dannevirke man killed in a crash on Boxing Day are mourning the loss of a "precious soul".

Yesterday police named the motorcyclist who died in a crash near Ashhurst, Manawatu, as Daimon Jonathan Mark Sattrup.

His motorcycle collided with a car on Napier Rd near Ashhurst around 5.45pm on Monday. The two people in the car received moderate injuries.

The 25-year-old was a "much loved and treasured son of Harvey and Rosie and their partners Shane Ritchie and Jackie Dailey", his funeral notice read.

It stated Sattrup was a loved brother and mate to Branden (Willy), and was loved by all his grandparents "but special mate to Doug Edmonds".

There has been an outpouring of tributes for the Dannevirke resident on social media, including from his aunt, who reminded people to be safe on the roads.

"We lost one of the most amazing people that anyone would be lucky to have met and known," she wrote. "My amazing nephew Daimon Sattrup was taken way too early, all because some idiot couldn't wait 10 more seconds.

"Please drive safe. Don't behave irresponsibly when behind the wheel of a vehicle, your actions have consequences and these devastate the lives of many people."

Others spoke of Sattrup as being a "precious soul" and a "real gentleman".

As of last night, Sattrup was one of four motorcyclists killed during the holiday period on New Zealand's roads.

His death brought the road toll during this period to eight. It now stands at 12, the total of last year's holiday period.

The official holiday began at 4pm on December 23, and runs until 6am on January 4.

The crash is being investigated by the Serious Crash Unit, and will be referred to the coroner.

Police said their thoughts were with Sattrup's family "during this sad time".

A service for Sattrup will be held at The Hub in Dannevirke on January 3, followed by burial at Mangatera Lawn Cemetery.
