Farmers chat at the Dannevirke Saleyards on Tuesday before the first Dannevirke and Pahiatua combined weaner calf fair.

Buyers could purchase top quality stock with confidence, PGG Wrightson auctioneer Bjorn Anderson told a large bench of buyers at the Dannevirke sale yards on Tuesday.

At the combined Dannevirke/Pahiatua weaner calf fair, vendors presented stock which had a reputation for shifting well, Anderson said.

The first pen into the sales ring were a top line up of six autumn-born Friesian calves which went for $500 a head.

The second line, described by Anderson as "outstanding", went for $565 a head, before a single bull fetched $590.

Next up were 14 quality spring-born calves from a Dannevirke vendor which made $550, with 21 head from Lasts of Kumeroa bringing $530.

"These home-bred stock have a great reputation," Anderson told buyers.

Prices fluctuated between $475 and $575, with a pen of 20 calves from Mountain View Farming of Te Rehunga making $490 and 18 calves from Sinclair Brothers, "out of massive Holsteins", Anderson said, bringing $538.

All prices were plus GST.
