Jacob Hulme-Moir from Porirua had his $2500 bike (pictured right) stolen off the back off a car in the carpark at Hawke's Bay Hospital, Hastings, while visiting his sick grandfather.

Jacob Hulme-Moir from Porirua had his $2500 bike (pictured right) stolen off the back off a car in the carpark at Hawke's Bay Hospital, Hastings, while visiting his sick grandfather.

The Hulme-Moir family were still in hope their son's stolen $2500 bike would show up before they returned home yesterday.

It hadn't by the time Hawke's Bay Today went to press last night.

In what was daylight robbery, a brazen thief stole 16-year-old Jacob's bike last Saturday afternoon while he was with his family at Hawke's Bay Hospital visiting his sick grand-dad.

Since the theft, the teenager has posted flyers up of his green and black specialised Stumpjumper evo 29er 2014 in the area it was stolen, and also spoken to the newspaper.

This tenacity has yielded one lead, with someone who saw the flyer in a supermarket phoning the family about a sighting.

"He rang yesterday and said he had seen a kid riding around on it on a particular street," said Jacob's mum Mary.

"So my husband and son drove around the area of that street and asked a few questions but there has been no more information than that."

She said there was a possible name that was handed over and they had passed this information on to police.

"But nobody seems to know where he lives," she said.

"They had that one sighting and it could well have been the kid but nothing else. It will be a miracle to find it, I guess."

The family returned to Titahi Bay in Porirua yesterday as Mrs Hulme-Moir and her husband Angus had to work.

"I hope somebody picks the newspaper up today and there will be another sighting," she said.

However, she was wary that it could go the other way and the person who was allegedly seen riding the bike would see it in the newspaper and get rid of it.

"Hopefully, it will go the other way and someone will ring and say I saw that," she said.

Police were contacted to see how the the investigation was progressing, but had no further information.

If anyone has seen the bike or has any information about the theft, contact Hastings Police.
