Two local girls in cricket have scored accolades following an Australian cricket tour.
Abby Treder, from Tararua College, was awarded best batter and Ella Hogan from Dannevirke High School was awarded player of the tournament.
The two girls, along with Holly Henricksen, also at Dannevirke High, and Ashlee Filer (Feilding High School), all made it into the Manawatu Cricket Association Secondary School Girls Australian Cricket Tour.
They all had to help with numerous fundraisers such as a quiz night, golf day, and a few days of splitting and delivering firewood kindly donated by John Turkington Forestry.
The girls played five T20 games over the week with the seniors winning all of their games and the juniors winning most of theirs.
The girls learnt so much from this tournament including the importance of teamwork, building confidence, leadership, and learning to play on various pitches.
A local report said on day four Holly Henrickson steadied the innings and then the in-form Ella Hogan with swashbuckling Abby Treder came together - Abby on a mission struck 32 off 11 balls complemented by Hogan who also made 30.
On Day Five the report said: “Abby Treder scored 70 from 120 balls with shots all around the wicket - one reporter writing: “the learning experience of batting with Abby Treder is one that will benefit the younger girls in years to come.”
Women’s cricket season kicks off on October 28 with Dannevirke Women hosting PNGHS Blue.
