A search for a missing swimmer at a popular Hawke's Bay waterfall has been suspended for the night.

A police spokeswoman said they had received reports about 5.30pm a person had failed to resurface after diving into the water at Maraetotara Falls, near Hastings.

At about 7.30pm police said the search had been suspended until the morning.

A scene guard would be in place overnight.
