A "keen-eyed" neighbour spotted two men allegedly stealing a stash of gear from a Napier home.

Police called to the Roslyn Rd, Bluff Hill, scene found the men hiding behind a car on Bay View Rd with screwdrivers in hand about 4am on Wednesday.

Both men were arrested, before police found an electric bike, chainsaw, leaf blower and several tools down the road.

Both men were due to appear in Napier District Court on October 24 charged with burglary and possessing an offensive weapon.

Inspector Harry Harvey said police were able to return the gear before its owners even realised it was missing.

Harvey said it was a "great example to look out for your neighbours and let each other know if you notice anything unusual".
