Iona College student Emily Wilson has taken out the top prize in the Hawke's Bay Today Canon Harvey Norman summer in Hawke's Bay photo competition.

Emily was brought to tears when told she had won with an evocative shot of her brothers enjoying the last rays on a summer's evening in the countryside.

"When Mum told me I had won, I cried because I wasn't expecting it at all and I was really happy," she said.

Emily was given a camera for her birthday in December after asking "for ages".

She had been interested in photography for a long time and played around with the camera in manual mode as she heard that was the best settings to use it in.

One day after dinner her brothers were outside on their Ongaonga farm and asked her to photograph them on the bikes.

Emily played with different settings before taking the photo of the boys lifting their front wheels. She decided that would be the one to enter into the competition.

And as for advice for young photographers, Emily said to take plenty of photos and work out how to use the camera properly.

"Do lots of research on what things mean and the settings. Go out and take lots of photos and have fun."

She said she would be using her new Canon Eos 1300D kit later in the year to document her upcoming trip with to Italy with her classmates.

Emily's photo also won the People's Choice category in the competition, with the majority of a large number of votes.

Photo competition voter Catie Avery of Waipukurau won a bottle of wine after her name was randomly picked out of a hat.
