Angus cows fetched top prices at Stortford Lodge's annual fair.

Angus cows fetched top prices at Stortford Lodge's annual fair.

A big yarding of more than 1200 in-calf cows sold on a strong market at yesterday's annual fair at Stortford Lodge. The yarding was double last year's fair tally of 626 head.

The quality of this year's offering reflected the good season with plenty of big heavy cows sold.

Many of the pens topped the $3/kg mark with the top price being $3.58/kg or $1630/head for 27 mixed-age angus cows from Moeangiangi Station, Waikare.

The top per-head price was $1910 paid for eight 556kg capital-stock south devon stud R3 heifers from Okaharau Station, Elsthorpe. The farm has been sold. Last year's top price was $1750/head for a pen of angus heifers.

In the sheep section the return of some big buyers kept the store lamb prices strong for an offering of about 2400 mostly good-quality stock.
