Prices for weaner steers at Stortford Lodge were a bit down on last year.

WEANER CATTLE FAIR

The Hawke's Bay weaner cattle fair season got off to a strong start at Stortford Lodge on Tuesday.

About 1800 weaner steers were sold mostly to Hawke's Bay buyers in a full cattle rostrum at prices below last year's but above sales elsewhere in the country where feed is short. Other buyers came from Waikato, Taumarunui and Ashburton.

The steers on offer were all top quality, a reflection of the plentiful feed in Hawke's Bay.
Agents said the sale was strong and better than weaner fairs in areas short of rain.

In a change of policy this fair was open to all breeds. Usually the steer fairs are divided into traditional breeds and exotic breeds.
