Police will be doing everything they can over the extended holiday break to get dangerous drivers off the road Central District road policing manger Inspector Dave White says.

This includes the return of the speed limit tolerance which will be reduced to 4km/h during the official Easter holiday period through to ANZAC weekend, police say.

The speeding threshold would be reduced starting at 4pm tomorrow and ending at 6am Monday April 28.

For the extended period, the speed limit tolerance would be 4km/h for all permanent posted speed limits. Police would act where vehicle speeds were checked at more than 4km/h above the limit.

As Easter holidays and Anzac Day approaches and we move into colder months, Central District police wanted to remind motorists to ensure their vehicle was roadworthy before they embarked on a road trip.

Mr White said it was important for motorists to check their tyre tread with the onset of colder months.

"[In winter] the road can turn into a slippery surface from rain and black ice," Mr White said.

"If your tyres don't have enough tread, braking in an emergency could turn into a huge problem."

The legal minimum tread depth was 1.5mm.

However, tyre grip in wet conditions reduced significantly if tread depth was below 3mm.

Police will also watch for driving and talking on a hand-held mobile phone

"Responsible drivers tell us they don't want to share the roads with drunk, drugged, speeding, or dangerous drivers. We'll be out in numbers and doing all we can over the extended break to get those drivers who put others at risk off the roads," Mr White said.

If you want to know about potential traffic delays visit onthemove.govt.nz or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS for either the latest highway conditions or to report incidents or hazards.
