Hundreds of children from around Hawke's Bay gathered in Napier for special party on Saturday.

A total of 700 children from Wairoa to Dannevirke and northeast to Taupo attended the 10th annual Hawke's Bay Special Children's Extravaganza, organised by Special Children's Christmas Parties (SCCP), at Pettigrew Green Arena on Saturday.

SCCP area manager Darren Bailey said the event was held each year to put a smile on children's faces who were in difficult situations.

Children were chosen by about 150 charities, schools and organisations to be invited to the event under the categories of life threatening illness, physical and intellectual impairment, domestic violence, or living in underprivileged circumstances.

The event was a good way for children to be able to enjoy themselves without feeling different or being judged, Mr Bailey said.

"Some of these kids are in and out of hospital every day, this gives them and their families a chance to have a positive day."

The best part of the day for him was seeing how happy the children were.

Mr Bailey said he had also spoken to several parents who had been overwhelmed by seeing how much fun their children were having.

Hastings resident, Vicki Tomlinson, who brought her two girls aged 10 and 12 for the first time, said she was pleased to be able to see the joy an on their faces.

"It's really awesome for the kids.

"It's such a neat little outing for them, they need to have some excitement."

Chris English, from Napier, who brought his 3-year-old daughter, also for the first time, said he thought the organisers had put on a great event and all the children were enjoying themselves.

"It's really cool that they have done it."

The free event had food, games, rides and various local entertainment including dancers, singers, magicians and cheerleaders.

Each child was also given two or three presents to take home.

The event is supported by local businesses each year.

SCCP holds four Christmas parties and two mid-winter events around the country annually.
