Cash and a firearm were stolen from a ute parked in a busty shopping area.

Thieves got away with a firearm and a quantity of cash after smashing two windows of a ute parked in a busy shopping area on Friday.

Napier police are investigating the thefts of the firearm and its black soft rifle case, the cash and other items which were stolen from a Blue 2014 Ford Ranger Ute, parked in the Farmlands car park adjacent to Prebenson Drive between 3pm and 8pm.

Police said the thieves entered the vehicle by smashing a window before stealing the items.

They said circumstances suggested the thieves struggled to gain entry to the vehicle having attempted to break one window without success and moving to smash another window.

As the theft took place in an open car park, opposite a busy highway, police are appealing to the public for any sightings or information of suspicious people or vehicles seen in that area between 3pm and 8pm on Friday, April 8.
