The Hastings City Art Gallery will confront how you think about an exhibition with cre8, a show that will challenge you to be the artist.

Opening on Waitangi Day, February 6, the exhibition will have eight creation stations that will allow anyone to delve into his or her creative side by exploring different media.

The gallery wants members of the public to try their hand at creating masterpieces inspired by some of today's renowned artists. "From wall drawing, to hanging installation, to contemporary weaving, there's something for everyone", said Hastings City Art Gallery director Kath Purchas.

"Our main aim with cre8 is to offer a practical exhibition that both adults and children can participate in and enjoy. This show offers a wonderful artistic outlet and an opportunity for people to experiment and collaborate with others".

She said the exhibition fitted in with the gallery's slogan, "art for all". "We're always developing new exhibitions and activities that have a wide community appeal and extend the understanding and enjoyment of art."

"We are encouraging people to come and visit again during the life of the exhibition to see how the artworks are progressing. You can also check out your work on the Hastings City Art Gallery Facebook page."

She said cre8 would be the final exhibition she would curate as director of the Hastings City Art Gallery.

"I've loved my time at the gallery, but after more than seven years here it's time for me to explore a few creative business ideas of my own.

"I now look forward to supporting the gallery as a visitor."

*Cre8 will be opening to the public at the Hastings City Art Gallery from February 6 to March 29. For more information contact Hastings City Art Gallery on 871 5095.
