A record has already been broken on the first day of the Hawke's Bay Sport Fishing Club's Coruba tournament - with a shark!

Yesterday, Terry Jenkins, aboard Makaira, spent several hours hauling in a 107kg thresher shark near Cape Kidnappers.

Hawke's Bay Sports Fishing Club manager John Collins said the shark was a game changer.

"It is only day one, we still have two more days to go," he said. "It is fairly rare to get a thrasher in the Bay, especially one of that weight."

The shark beat a previous record of about 80kg.
