A severe thunderstorm warning for Central Hawke’s Bay has been lifted, but the risk of more foul weather today remains.

MetService issued the initial warning of severe thunderstorms and torrential rain for the Omakere area between 3.30pm and 4pm, now lifted.

But a severe thunderstorm watch remains in place for Hawke’s Bay and Tararua until 8pm, according to the weather service’s website.

“Thunderstorms have developed this afternoon in Hawke’s Bay south of Napier and also in the Tararua District. These thunderstorms are expected to produce localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25 mm/h, and hail 10 to 20 mm in diameter.

“However, there is a moderate risk a few of these thunderstorms could become severe this afternoon and early evening, bringing heavy rain with intensities of 25 to 35 mm/h, and large hail greater than 20 mm in diameter.

“Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.”

Driving conditions would also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain, MetService said.

The National Emergency Management Agency advises that as storms approach:

  • Take shelter, preferably indoors away from windows
  • Avoid sheltering under trees, if outside
  • Get back to land, if outdoors on the water
  • Move cars under cover or away from trees
  • Secure any loose objects around your property
  • Check that drains and gutters are clear
  • Be ready to slow down or stop, if driving.

During and after the storm, you should also:

  • Beware of fallen trees and power lines
  • Avoid streams and drains as you may be swept away in flash flooding.
