Should Clive lift the silverware in the women's grade at the Hawke's Bay Sevens in Waipukurau today Laine Robinson's 21st will have to be toasted.

Her 21st was the reason former Tuis speedster, 19-year-old Talon Robinson, returned from Brisbane last weekend. It also means the pair and their 16-year-old sister Raegan will all play together for Clive for the first time in the Paladin-sponsored tournament at Central Park.

While three sisters have played for Clive in 15-a-side rugby in the past it will be the first time three sisters have played for the club in sevens at the same tournament.

"We were hoping to talk mum into playing but she reckoned she was past it," Talon said referring to their mother Kelly Bartlett.

"It's going to be pretty special. We've played together in Outkast Sports touch teams in the past but never in sevens or rugby teams," Talon said.

A mother of one, Talon, moved to Brisbane because her partner had work there. She hopes to get involved in touch and rugby across the Tasman when she returns next week.

"Dad [former Magpies winger Jason Robinson] and Ash [their brother Ash Robinson] have never played in a title-winning side at the Hawke's Bay Sevens so it would be good to go one up on them," she added.

"I'm more of a netballer and haven't played rugby since my last year at Karamu High School but playing with the sisters was too good an opportunity to turn down. If I enjoy it I might mix rugby with my netball commitments during the winter," Laine said.

A goal defence or wing defence for Outkast Sports premier netball side, Laine, will be used as a forward today. She played alongside Talon in the national title-winning Hawke's Bay under-15 mixed team which was coached by her uncles, former New Zealand touch reps Anaru and Nui Bartlett, in 2012.

Sixteen-year-old Raegan, a year 12 student at Karamu High School, played with Talon for the Petone team which lost 29-7 to Feilding Old Boys Oroua in last year's women's final in Waipukurau.

"We've got a pretty good Clive team this year. I reckon we will do well if we all work together," Raegan said.

A flanker in 15s, Raegan, will be used out wide today.

"My big goal this year is to make the Tuis. I was red flagged last year because I was too young."

Another of her aims this season is to help Karamu High School regain the Hawke's Bay Secondary Schoolgirls title which Gisborne Girls' High School won last year with a 19-15 win against Hastings Girls' High School in the final.

Clive will be one of seven teams in the women's grade. Their chances of travelling home with the Jiangsu Jersey are high following the withdrawal of Feilding Old Boys Oroua who have won the grade at the past three tournaments.

However, player-coach Te Maari MacGregor declined the favourite's tag and pointed out she is using today's tournament to build towards their defence of Hawke's Bay's premier women's 15-a-side title.

Fifteen teams including the 2016 and '17 champions Napier Pirate Rugby and Sports will compete in the open men's grade. The Pirate side will miss the services of former All Black Sevens rep Jonathan Ruru, an influential figure in their title successes, who is now in the Blues Super Rugby squad.

The country's second ranked team Napier Old Boys Marist won't be represented and fellow Bay premier teams Taradale and Clive have also opted out. Expect Havelock North to display the benefits of having played at last weekend's club nationals in Auckland where they finished 10th.

Tamatea are fielding two teams and coach Matt Marsh agreed their top side boasts enough ammunition to reach the semifinals.

New Zealand open men's touch rep Ash Robinson, former Hawks basketballer Mataeus Marsh, captain of last year's national top four secondary schools winners Hastings Boys' High School Kianu Kereru-Symes and 2016 and '17 New Zealand Secondary Schools rugby rep Lincoln McClutchie, former MAC captain Everard Reid and Tamatea stalwart Hamiora Rowlands are all capable of breaching the best of defences.

Hastings Rugby and Sports, like Tamatea and Havelock North, should also reach the semifinals.

Central Hawke's Bay fans will watch the progress of the Central Barbarians team with interest.

This side contains former Central players including world champion 1999 New Zealand under-19 player Rob Evans and former prolific tryscorer Mark Donald.

Sitting among the Central fans for the first time in 35 years, after organising the last 34 tournaments, will be Ross and Betty Angus. Central Hawke's Bay Rugby and Sports Club president Tony Mackie said he hoped today's event will be up to the Angus' high standard.

Nine teams will chase the Angus Cup colts title. Winners for the past four years, Petone, won't be among them.
