A fire has broken out near Meeanee speedway in Napier.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene of the scrub fire, near Sandy Rd, about 9.55am.

A police communications spokesperson said the fire was in scrub and a fence.

Firefighters at the scene said the fire was caused by a power line being blown over by strong winds, which sparked and ignited grass.

Sandy Rd is closed to traffic.
