A schoolboy is being flown to Auckland's Starship hospital after he was found hanging from a window.

Emergency services were called to Taradale Primary School at 1.15pm today after a pupil was found unconscious and having difficulty breathing.

It has been reported that the boy went to jump out a window while playing and his shirt got caught - leaving him hanging.

An ambulance transported the 9-year-old boy to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital. He is currently in an induced coma and is being flown to Auckland's Starship Hospital.

Police are treating the incident as an accident. They would not release specific details of what happened until the police investigation is completed.

The school day was continuing as usual and parents were being sent a letter regarding the incident.

Specialist support was being offered to any pupils who were upset by the incident.
