Santa chats with George Symes, 9, and Caitlin Symes, 12, in his grotto in the Hastings city centre.

Santa’s in town and he’s dropped a hint to Hastings Mayor Wendy Schollum about who might be on his nice list.

Schollum was one of Santa’s first visitors at his grotto in the historic Westerman’s Building across from the town clock, which opens this weekend.

“His grotto is looking amazing, a real wonderland, and Santa looks right at home,” Schollum said.

“He even gave me a glimpse of who’s on the nice list in Hastings and he’s looking forward to meeting lots of visitors and spreading some Christmas cheer.

“I also shared my Christmas wish, which was for everyone to have a safe and happy summer.”

The elves have been busy underneath Santa’s sleigh, transforming the shop space into a magical, North Pole-themed winter wonderland with decorations, Christmas trees and twinkling lights.

Visitors can bring an unwrapped gift for the giving tree suitable for children, teens and women, which will be donated to Women’s Refuge.

There are eight free sessions to visit Santa in his grotto from December 13-22, when people can meet Santa, post their letters and take a festive photo.
