The festive season might be a happy time for many, but for some putting together a Christmas lunch might not be feasible.

With many community Christmas lunches planned for Monday, churches, along with the Napier Salvation Army have teamed up to cook a festive feast for those less fortunate than themselves and "share the gift of Christ with everyone."

Organiser and Lay preacher Trinity Methodist Church, Jim Gaudin said it was for anyone who didn't have anywhere else to go or anybody to share Christmas with.

"The event is put on for those people less fortunate than the rest of us in the community to give them the chance to be able to spend time with someone during Christmas, even if it's only for the short time that they're there for the meal."

The Rotary Club has donated presents to hand out to the guests who arrive, something which Mr Gaudin said was "very generous."

"For many of these people, it's probably the only present that they will get."

Having run for a number of years now, they currently have 35 volunteers who have given up their own time to help others.

They have received a number of donations, including $500 from Napier Council, Pac N Save Tamatea through their suppliers donated meat and vegetables, $200 from New World, items from the Salvation Army's food bank, as well as individual people coming forward with money or food.

At this stage they have 135 people expected to turn up, although with the Christmas Community Lunch run by Age Concern in Havelock North has already reached their limit of people, so they were anticipating more.

He said Mayor Bill Dalton was expected to turn up to the event.

Their Community Christmas Lunch will be held at 56 Tait Dr, Tamatea from 11.30am.
