Early morning commuters heading into the Hastings CBD yesterday morning could have been forgiven for thinking the city had been struck by a flash flood.
Sheets of water stretched across the footpaths and road intersection of Eastbourne Rd and Karamu Rd.
"There was water everywhere - like a big lake,"one onlooker said.
The culprit was not a sudden overnight downpour however, as the water, thousands of litres of it, emerged from below the ground, not above.
A section of water piping about a metre underground had ruptured, pushing water up to and across the landscape just before 6am.
