Napier West regained bragging rights over the Wakely Shield primary schools rugby tournament yesterday as they won the trophy for the sixth time in 12 years.

The trophy was secured with a four-tries-to-one 24-8 win over Napier East in the tournament deciding match, at Taradale Reserve in Napier.

The under-55kg competition win completed a primary schools double for Napier after the Bay city's under-55kg side won the Ross Shield tournament in Hastings last week, but left Napier East still without a grasp of the silverware in the 12 years since the tournament was first held in 2004.

The two Napier sides had gone into the fifth and final day on 19 points each, having each during the week put paid to the hopes of Hastings East, the founding-year winners who had been out to complete a hat-trick and also claim the trophy for a sixth time.
