Hawke's Bay Rugby Football Union chairman Brendan Mahony is rapt with the enthusiasm being generated as a possible constitutional review of his organisation looms.
"It's good to hear about the meeting. Hopefully some good candidates for the vacancies on our board of directors will come out of it. If theclub delegates want a constitutional review I'm happy for one. Obviously it's not something which can be done over night but it can be done," Mahony said.
The meeting he was referring to will be held at the Bay City Outreach Centre in Hastings tonight. MAC club delegate Anthony Morley and his Maraenui counterpart Doug Laing called the meeting in the wake of this month's resignations of four union directors, Kevin Atkinson, Dan Druzianic, Taine Randell and Simon Tremain.
Laing said the meeting is aimed at deciding on a requisition to the union CEO Mike Bishop, to call a special general meeting aimed at re-establishing the board and raising relevant issues.
"The remaining board members are unable to make any decisions because the board no longer has a quorum according to the constitution. It is thus incumbent on the clubs to requisition for a special general meeting which can be done with a minimum of one fourth of clubs, meaning six clubs agreeing and signing."
"There appears to be no other alternative in the constitution meaning it would otherwise fall to the NZRFU to appoint an interim board," Laing added.
Sport Hawke's Bay CEO Mark Aspden will have an independent chairman's role tonight.
Mahony was aware of a special general meeting called for June 1 at McLean Park. Representatives of the Hastings, Clive, Napier Old Boys Marist, Havelock North and Napier Technical clubs have requested the meeting which is aimed at electing two rugby directors to the board.
Nominations for these two positions close on Thursday. Laing said tonight's meeting could agree to the June 1 meeting doubling as a follow-up one to tonight's.
