Barbarians rugby, free-flowing and entertaining no matter which country ... yes it's exactly where Magpies centre Jonah Lowe belongs.

The Magpies 2016 back-of-the-year, Lowe, was the logical choice when Provincial Barbarians coach Clayton McMillan was considering Hawke's Bay players for tonight's clash against the Lions at Toll Stadium in Whangarei.

McMillan no doubt still has memories of Lowe's two tries during the final five minutes of the Magpies' 26-24 loss to McMillan's Bay of Plenty Steamers in their last game of the season in Napier last year.

The 2016 Baby Black has the skills, pace and flair to make something out of nothing regardless of the quality of opposition. Expect the substitute outside back to make an impact when McMillan slips the collar off him tonight.

"I'll be coming on at centre but I will also be covering wing. It's getting pretty close and it's going to be pretty awesome for the whole family," Lowe said shortly after the Provincial Barbarians team was announced on Thursday afternoon.

"Mum and dad [Maliana and Derek] got the two free tickets I was allocated and I'm also going to have two of my brothers and a sister among the spectators," Lowe explained.

One of four Lowe brothers to play for the Clive premier team, Lowe, is a younger brother of Magpies centurion and former Hurricanes flanker Karl Lowe who played for the Maori All Blacks against England in 2010.

"The family have told me how lucky I am to get a crack at the Lions because they don't come to New Zealand that often. Karl hasn't given me any advice yet but it will be the same as he always gives ... 'have a go and back yourself'," Lowe said.

"Clayton has told us there's not much pressure on us because we are the underdogs. He has also told us to go out and show a bit of flair because we've got nothing to lose."

Lowe pointed out the Barbarians team, which contained players from 14 different unions, assembled last Saturday and had grown tighter through a variety of team activities.

"We also had a hit out against Northland, 10 attacks each at high intensity. The boys have got some good game plans."

Lowe, who will play in Whangarei for the first time tonight, has watched footage of Lions outside centre Jonathan Joseph playing for England in the Six Nations.

"It's going to be good playing against the best players in the Northern Hemisphere."

Between Lowe and brother Karl the Lowe family have scored a decent selection of international jerseys during traditional swaps but the family have yet to secure a Lions one.

"Hopefully we get the opportunity to swap one. Both of this weekends jerseys will be pretty special for the family and as I said earlier not many players get to play against the Lions."

While Lowe is the sole Magpie in the team Wellington-based former Magpies prop Tolu Fahamokioa is also on the Barbarians subs bench. Otago hooker Sam Anderson-Heather, who will captain the Barbarians, played for the Hastings Boys' High School 1st XV the year after Karl Lowe left the school.

The Lions New Zealand-born centre Jared Payne, who Lowe may have got game time against, has been ruled out of the game with a calf strain and has been replaced by England's Elliot Daly. The 31-year-old Ireland player is a former Northland rep.

Teams:
Provincial Barbarians: Luteru Laulala, Sam Vaka, Inga Finau, Dwayne Sweeney, Sevu Reece, Bryn Gatland, Jack Stratton, Mitchell Dunshea, Lachlan Boshier, James Tucker, Keepa Mewett, Josh Goodhue, Oliver Jager, Sam Anderson-Heather (captain), Aidan Ross. Reserves: Andrew Makalio, Tolu Fahamokioa, Marcel Renata, Matt Matich, Peter Rowe, Richard Judd, Jonah Lowe, Junior Ngaluafe.
