It was enough of a knee twist to make TV viewers' eyes water.

Yes, Hawke's Bay rugby fans still grimace when they recall Magpies and Chiefs lock Michael Allardice's ruptured medial ligament in his left knee collected in his Super Rugby starting debut for the Chiefs almost 12 months ago.

Tomorrow night he will return to the Cake Tin in Wellington for the first time in Chiefs colours since that May 9, 2015 injury.

Rightfully so that injury will be far from Allardice's main thoughts.

His main focus will be helping the Chiefs maintain their top-of-the-table status and continue their quest for improvement.

"Everything is healed now and that is a long time ago," said Allardice, who will play his 14th match for the Chiefs.

Fully recovered from an elbow injury suffered earlier this month, Allardice, said he was thrilled with the regular minutes he had been getting. He is equally impressed with how the Chiefs are functioning as a team.

"But at the same time, I don't think we have got to where we want to be going and this weekend will be a good test," Allardice said.

He is predicting a physical encounter.

"The Hurricanes' boys will look to beat us up in the battle of the forwards. It's important we look to take them on up front and beat them up, too, so we can allow our backs to score the tries we all know they are capable of."

"At the same time everyone expects tries from our counter attack. Hopefully we keep bringing it and keep scoring them," Allardice added.

He is also hoping fine weather similar to what the Chiefs have trained in at their Hamilton base this week will greet them in the capital.

"It is just like training and playing for Hawke's Bay. I couldn't be happier," he added.

With none of the Bay's Hurricanes in the host team's 23 and five 2016 Magpies - Allardice, fellow lock Brodie Retallick, halfback Brad Weber, winger Sam McNicol and utility back Andrew Horrell - plus former Magpie Hika Elliot and Bay age-group product Rhys Marshall in the Chiefs' 23, it doesn't take a genius to work out who Magpies fans will be supporting. Should Horrell get time off the pine it will be his first outing of the season after recovering from a groin injury, and his 50th match for the Chiefs.

Weber and first five-eighth Aaron Cruden will start together for the fourth consecutive game. Both will be eager to gauge their form against their respective opponents, TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett, who are both ranked ahead of them in the tussle for All Black jerseys.

There will be plenty of interest in how McNicol performs when marking former Magpie and All Black Cory Jane.

Lock Blade Thomson's return from injury is the only change to the Hurricanes starting XV.

Thomson comes back into the side after missing the last match due to a bruised knee, replacing Vaea Fifita, who has been named on the reserves' bench.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd said his selections reflected the strong performance against the Rebels in Melbourne last week where his side picked up five valuable competition points.

"We are building a lot of competition in the squad through performance and there were some tough calls when it came to selection, but this group got the job done away from home last week and there weren't any compelling reasons to make too many changes."

Boyd has also been able to strengthen his bench considerably with a number of players returning from minor injuries.

Openside Callum Gibbins is back after a week off due to a sore achilles, halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi has recovered from a swollen knee, and utility back James Marshall is over the concussion that kept him out of the last two matches.

Willis Halaholo edges out Ngani Laumape as the backs' final reserve, while loose-head prop Loni Uhila gets an opportunity with Ben May out with a stiff neck.

Boyd said there was no doubt the Chiefs represented a significant step up for the squad.

"I won't have to say a lot this week. The team knows this is a big match and the Chiefs form and team sheet speak for themselves. They are a well-coached side that poses threats across the park. We will have to be at our best at both ends of the park if we want to compete."

The teams:

Hurricanes: Jason Woodward, Cory Jane, Matt Proctor, Vince Aso, Julian Savea, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara (vc), Victor Vito, Ardie Savea, Brad Shields, Michael Fatialofa, Blade Thomson, Jeff Toomaga-Allen, Dane Coles (c), Reggie Goodes.
Substitutes: Forwards, Motu Matu'u, Chris Eves, Loni Uhila, Vaea Fifita, Callum Gibbins. Backs, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, James Marshall, Willis Halaholo.

Chiefs: Damian McKenzie, Toni Pulu, Seta Tamanivalu, Charlie Ngatai, Sam McNicol, Aaron Cruden, Brad Weber, Michael Leitch, Sam Cane, Tom Sanders, Brodie Retallick, Michael Allardice, Atu Moli, Rhys Marshall, Mitchell Graham.
Substitutes: Forwards, Hika Elliot, Siate Tokolahi, Siegfried Fisi'ihoi, Taleni Seu, Maama Vaipulu. Backs, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Andrew Horrell, Glen Fisiiahi.
