Rocket Lab launch pad moves to Mahia

The relocation of a rocket company's launch base from Christchurch to northern Hawke's Bay is fantastic for the region, Wairoa mayor Craig Little says.

Kiwi-founded rocket company Rocket Lab is moving its launch base to the Mahia Peninsula.

The Mahia Peninsula is within the Wairoa district and Mr Little said it was fantastic news and an exciting time for the people of Wairoa.

"We have done a lot of work to bring this company on board, they are the real deal. It was disappointing when we lost them down south but I think they have made a great decision and all the boxes were obviously ticked," Little said.

He said it was the perfect location with minimal air and sea traffic.

"I'm not a rocket scientist, but I imagine this gives them more options for projectile directions."

Their ideal location is understood to be somewhere remote, but with reliable access to amenities such as power and internet connectivity.

The company has produced a 10-tonne rocket capable of sending satellites into space for about $6 million - a fraction of the average cost of about $150 million and it aims to launch rockets from 2017.

Headed by New Zealander Peter Beck, Rocket Lab has received financial backing from Warehouse founder Sir Stephen Tindall, the New Zealand Government and US financiers.

Little said the development would greatly benefit Wairoa and could provide a significant boost to the local economy.

The company's website said it hopes to be able to provide at least 100 satellite launches per year.
