One person was killed after a car and truck collided in a high-impact crash at Te Awa, Napier.

The crash, on State Highway 51, Marine Parade, just south of the intersection with Ellison St, occurred about 11.10am on Thursday.

It's understood the driver of the car died at the scene.

Two fire trucks and one ambulance attended the incident, with the road closed between Ellison St and Awatoto Rd.

The road was reopened at 7pm following successful vehicle recovery by a crane.

"Thanks for your patience while the Serious Crash Unit completed their investigation," NZTA said in an update.

Earlier in the day a police spokeswoman said the normally busy road was expected to be closed for some time.

"Please detour via Awatoto Rd and Te Awa Ave, expect delays along your route."

Police had advised motorists to avoid the area, if possible.

"Thanks for your continued patience, and for taking extra care on the detour, via Te Awa Ave," NZTA said.
