A Harley Davidson rider tried to pass a station-wagon on Pakipaki Rd near Hastings last night but was side-swiped during the manoeuvre.

The incident happened just north of the roundabout at the start of State Highway 2, at the intersection of Te Aute and Pakipaki roads, about 6pm.

The Harley's rider and passenger were taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital for treatment.

A witness said that one of them had a broken leg.

The car's driver was shaken but not injured.

The witness described hearing a "sickening bang" before everything had gone quiet.

One lane of the road was closed to traffic for about an hour.
