Members of a Napier family are offering a $500 reward for the return of their missing caravan, which they bought after their first washed out to sea in a flood.

For two years Chris and Lorraine Hayne and their two children enjoyed spending the summer months in their 7.6-metre caravan at Kairakau Beach Camp.

But in May their caravan, worth about $15,000, disappeared from a private camping ground in Te Apiti Rd, Kairakau, where they were storing it for the winter.

"Normally we take it home with us but because it wasn't roadworthy, we parked it up there," Mr Hayne said. "It just disappeared."

He believed the caravan was stolen and is offering a $500 reward for any information that could lead to its return. "The road it was on, nobody drives down. It's a metal road. We think it's still in the area."

It is the second time the Haynes have lost a caravan.

In 2011 their first caravan was washed away from Kairakau Beach with two other caravans in flash floods that devastated the East Coast.

Mr Hayne said the family was fortunate enough to be in the safety of their Waipawa home, where they lived at the time. "The river broke its banks and it swept our caravan and two others out to sea."
