"Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes.
"It is a leading cause of preventable adult blindness. Retinal screening is an integral aspect of care for diabetics.
"Patients are referred to the service by their GPs. The service is fully funded by the DHB so there are no costs to the patient, but the fact we now have services in Napier and Taradale provides greater convenience."
The service, overseen by DHB consultant ophthalmologist Ewan Fraser, will be delivered by a qualified optometrist at each of the six locations.
"Sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy is largely preventable through regular retinal screening and prompt treatment," Dr Fraser said.
"Primary care plays a critical role in ensuring patients are referred for, and attend retinal screening so they can be treated before avoidable loss of vision occurs.
"People with diabetes should have their eyes checked through the retinal screening programme at least every two years. I would urge diabetics to talk to their general practice team if they have not had a retinal screen in the last two years."
