The R.E.I.D Wellbeing Program has grown to reach 28 schools across Hawke’s Bay, supporting more than 12,000 students.

It’s designed to equip young people with software tools to strengthen emotional wellbeing, and positive mental health.

A spokesperson for the Reid O’Leary Charitable Trust said the impact it was seeing in classrooms and school communities was both “encouraging and inspiring”.

“As demand continues to grow, our goal is to expand the programme even further, with another tranche of schools joining next year,” the spokesperson said.

“Achieving this relies on the generosity of people who believe, as we do, that early wellbeing support can change lives. Supporting the programme doesn’t have to be a large commitment to make a meaningful difference.

“By giving up just one coffee a week about $6, your contribution can support 52 students for an entire year. It’s a simple act that creates lasting impact — helping young people develop the skills they need to navigate challenges, build confidence, and thrive.

“Whether you choose to support financially, advocate for the programme, or simply share our story, your involvement helps us reach more students and strengthen more communities.”

Another of the trust’s initiatives — the Run for Reido — began in 2021, just four months after the suicide of local mechanic Reid O’Leary. Held next month, it was created to encourage conversation around suicide awareness and mental health.

Organisers said the event is for the community to come together, support each other, and create space for open, honest conversations around mental health and suicide.

All donations will support the R.E.I.D Wellness Program — helping raise awareness, education, and prevention of suicide, while giving schools access to real-time wellbeing tools to better support young people.

The event will take place on May 9 at Mitre10 Park, Hastings, from 1pm-4pm. For information see reidolearycharitabletrust.co.nz.
