Dannevirke rugby fans will have the chance to get up close to the Ranfurly Shield on Monday when members of the victorious Magpies take the Log o' Wood on tour.

The whistlestop tour begins in Dannevirke with the shield on display at Dannevirke Rugby Park between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

From Dannevirke the shield will then be taken to Waipukurau then Wairoa.

Hawke's Bay Rugby Union chief executive Jay Campbell said he was excited at the opportunity to bring the shield down to share with the Dannevirke community.

He said the shield would be accompanied by several of the players but because they were playing North Harbour

on Saturday it wasn't known at this stage who would be available.

One familiar Dannevirke face who will be on the tour is Jayden Pinfold, Hawke's Bay rugby's strength and conditioning coach. After Saturday's match the Magpies will face their first challenge for the shield next Friday when they play Northland.

While tour organisers hope there will be a good turnout from Dannevirke schools, the event is open to anyone interested and there will be the opportunity for photographs.
