Two vehicles were involved in the 6am crash, which left one person critically injured and another in a serious condition.

One person is in a critical condition and another in a serious condition after a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2 north of Napier.

Emergency services were called to the Putorino scene near Haliburton Rd about 6am on Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said that two utes were involved.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said they responded with two ambulances.

“Two patients were assessed at the scene, with one patient in a critical condition transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital and one patient in a serious condition transported to Wairoa Hospital.”

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said both vehicles were off the road and no one was trapped upon arrival.

He said two fire trucks from Wairoa, one from Napier and one from Putorino, were called to the scene.

NZTA said at 7.40am that stop/go management was in place north of the Waikare River Bridge.
