A large police contingent has been called to a busy petrol station and a park north of Napier after an incident nearby.

Police could be seen in the area of BP Bay View on Main North Rd, State Highway 2, about 11.10am. A large police presence was then parked down road from the BP, next to Petane Domain about 12.10pm.

A BP Bay View staff member said they could not comment on the nature of the incident. A police spokesperson said more information would be released when it was available.

Armed police appear to be scouring the area, checking multiple properties off SH2.

One nearby resident said she was unaware what had happened, but had seen police going down a driveway.
