A man in his 70s was struck by a vehicle on St Georges Rd in Hastings this morning and is in a critical condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital.

The accident happened near Grasmere Ave, believed to have happened after he left his vehicle and was clipped by a passing motorist at about 8am.

Police closed a section of St Georges Rd while the serious crash unit investigated.
A Unison truck was involved in the accident.

Unison spokesman Danny Gough said the company was doing all it could to help with the investigation and support the staff member involved.
