Hawke's Bay's new Backyard Summerfest offers something for art admirers, with demonstrations of carving, painting and graffiti adding another dimension to the music.

People will be able to watch artists as they work, or purchase an original piece to take home from the January 18 event, which replaces Blues, Brews and BBQs at the Waikoko Gardens in Hastings.

"There are not a lot of opportunities for artists to be able to display their work outside of the standard gallery setting," event organiser Kevin Murphy said.

"For me this is a chance for them to show others what they are about - we have ended up with quite a mix, from painters and multi media to a limestone and wrought iron sculptor and about three carvers - a graffiti artist will also do a huge work on the day."

Among the talented group is EIT graduate Jasmine Elliment, whose rustic creations are already proving very popular at local fairs.

"The course really helps with direction, it gives you tools to be an artist," she said. "The artwork I am bringing is quite new for me. Before, I was more of a fine artist. This is very different; it's all done on broken up pallet wood."

Being part of the festival was a great way to get her name and work out there.

"It's awesome, there aren't many places where people include this area - most of the time you are on your own."

Mr Murphy has been working with Creative Hastings and EIT's Exit Group to find artists who were a good fit. "When I suggested adding the art element, they were really keen to help; it adds another element and I think music and art go well together," he said.

Sola Rosa will headline the festival alongside a line up of local and national musicians including DJ General Lee, Jharmony, Devils Elbow, Jacki Houkamu and Ash Graham.

Backyard Summerfest is held in Waikoko Gardens at Hawke's Bay Showgrounds, Hastings, and is a charity fundraiser for Stortford Lodge Rotary. Tickets cost $35, plus Ticket Direct booking fees.
