Police were notified of a single car crash on State Highway 2, Wairoa at 11:55am on Sunday.
A St John spokeswoman said one ambulance and a helicopter were sent to the scene.
One patient was sent to Hawke's Bay
Hospital via helicopter in a serious condition.
The driver a male in his 30s is now in a stable condition in hospital.
