SH5 between Taupō and Napier reopens - one person dies after car and trailer crash

One person has died after a crash on State Highway 5, between Taupō and Napier, overnight.

Police were called to the single-vehicle crash near Rangitaiki School Rd about 2.10am.

A spokesperson said one person was found dead at the scene and two others had minor injuries.

The road was closed while the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene, and was reopened in both directions at 9.11am according to NZTA.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said four crews were sent to the crash scene, where a car and trailer had rolled.

One person was trapped and had to be extracted, he said.
