Matariki celebrations delighted Hastings residents on Wednesday.

Matariki celebrations delighted Hastings residents on Wednesday.

Hawke’s Bay has plenty of activities and events for people of all ages to enjoy. Olivia Whyte lists 9 things on offer this weekend.

1. Matariki Festival
Come along to the free Maori new year family celebration at the Napier Soundshell, Marine Parade. There's singers, dancers, kapa haka, bands and more. Free kiddies' rides and hot Kiwi kai are on offer. Walk through the maze of candle lanterns. Sky lanterns will float skywards to give
thanks for the harvest and the "new year" planting season. The show ends with a spectacular fireworks show to Maori and Pasifika music. Napier Soundshell, Marine Parade, Napier. Today 3-7pm.

2. Screenprinting
This workshop introduces practical techniques of screenprinting, including how to make a screen, how to use light-sensitive emulsion and how to print on to paper or a fabric surface. Workshop is suitable for beginners. To enrol, contact Tania on 974 8000 ext 5019 or taniais@eit.ac.nz. EIT Hawke's Bay Campus, 501 Gloucester St, Taradale, Napier, today and tomorrow, 9am-4pm.

3. Divine Light Sounding
Come to the beautiful Temple of Sound and feel your Angelic Vibration with the channelled Light Language, Divine Song and Sonic Soundings which are like rolling waves of sound, each one carrying you towards your embodiment of divine light here on Earth. This will be an hour-long sound ceremony with voice and silence to rejoice in the winter solstice and to anchor that light in Hawke's Bay. To book, call Lily on 022 366 2348 or email 333.lilstar@gmail.com. A Place To Be Retreat, Rotowhenua Rd, Napier. Tomorrow 2pm-3.30pm.

4. Acoustics with Mark Hagen
Come on down to The Brazen Head this Saturday from 2pm till 5pm and enjoy the sweet sounds from Mark Hagen, and don't be surprised if he gets you to sing along. R18. The Brazen Head Irish Ale & Coffee House, 21 Hastings St, Napier. Today, 2pm-5pm.

5. Acoustic music with Eilish Rose
What is better than spending a beautiful day listening to a talented young lady fill the air with amazing sounds. Eilish will be playing in the Garden bar this Sunday, (weather permitting) but, if it's too chilly out, we will bring the good tunes inside where it's warm and cozy. R18, The Brazen Head Irish Ale & Coffee House, 21 Hastings St, Napier. Tomorrow, 2pm-5pm.

6. Jewellery Upcycle Workshops
Ever wondered what to do with your old bits of jewellery that you really didn't want to throw out, "just in case"? Well, here's the "just in case" ... Three Saturday workshops on June 6, June 13 and June 20, 1pm-3pm in the CAN. Bring along your old bling and let Karyn show you how to turn it into something wearable that will amaze your friends. Only $15 per session. Creative Arts Napier, Community Arts Centre, 16 Byron St, Napier. Today, 1pm-3pm.

7. Black N Blue
Palmerston North-based Black N Blue play blues-orientated music in the style of Hank Crawford, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, Duke Robillard, Maceo Parker and others at Hawke's Bay Jazz Club. The experienced line-up is Johnny McCormick (saxes and flute), Kevin Downing (guitar guru), Ted Frickleton (drums), Paul Dredge (bass and vocals) and Chilean musician extraordinaire Gino Sanguinetti (keyboards). Cash bar and meals available. Bring your friends for a great night. Door sales only. Napier Sailing Club, 63 West Quay, Ahuriri, Napier. Tomorrow 5.30-8.15pm.

8. Cyclocross Hawke's Bay Round 2

There are three catagories: A grade (riders who like riding fast); B grade (riders who like having fun); Future Stars Kids' grade (open to any child with a bike, and free entry).
