When considering the top spots in New Zealand for a destination marathon, Hawke's Bay would have to be in the running.

The region has been rewarded as Air New Zealand has partnered with Lagardre Unlimited Oceania to bring the country's newest international marathon to Hawke's Bay.

The inaugural Hawke's Bay International Marathon will take place on May 14, 2016, showcasing our spectacular wine-growing region to runners and supporters from around New Zealand and the world.

The run is likely to start on Napier's Marine Parade and traverse a mix of roads, cycleways and private land before finishing at Sileni Estates Winery, Hastings.

Lagardre Unlimited Oceania chief executive David Beeche said Hawke's Bay offered a beautiful setting for the marathon, with bike trails, wineries, orchards and olive groves presenting a course that would be as pleasing on the eyes as the feet.

"Participants can cross the finish line and then sit back and enjoy the food, wine and local hospitality on offer. What better way to spend a weekend away with friends, either as a runner or a supporter?" Mr Beeche said.

The Hawke's Bay marathon will also include 21km and 10km races, and a 3km kids' race.

Local runner Hayden Pearce said he had always considered the Bay his favourite place to run.

"It's not just because of the great scenery, but the air is fresh and grounds are flat."

Mr Pearce is living in Wellington but said he would come home in a heartbeat for the event.

"I love endurance running, so it's a no-brainer."

Chief commercial and sales officer for Air New Zealand Cam Wallace said the sponsorship agreement covers events in both Hawke's Bay and Queenstown, in 2016 and 2017.
